Statement of Ethics

Ethics are an important part of society and do evolve culturally. I look to continually learn and improve. I try to be aware and sensitive to the contexts in and for which I am making images so that I can uphold respect and dignity for people and purpose. I obtain consent where I am photographing portraits /individuals, verbal and written. In the wider sense photography is able to be interpreted very subjectively so I seek to use its power responsibly and with a view to care for the environment.

Northumberland Spring 2021
19th April 2021
"THE LADY OF THE NORTH", Northumberland country park land sculpture. The lady lies sleeping at midday in the Spring snowfall.

It reminded me of a poem by E Thomas:
I know it must be winter though I sleep,
I know it must be winter, for I dream
I dip my bare feet in the running stream,
And flowers are many, and the grass grows deep.

Holy Island Northumberland

The close of the year would not be complete without the photographic pilgrimage to Holy Island which a good bunch of friends and I make. This year was huge fun, 22 of us ploughing through the mudsilt in chase of a dawn which turned out cloudless and brief... yet not to be missed. In balance with that was the evening blue calm which so blankets the island in a spiritual haven.

All the World's a Stage....
Tyne Theatre and Opera House Project.
Leading to the 2015 Heritage Open Days I have been recently involved with some colleagues in documenting by photography some of the design, space and history of this wonderful grade 1 listed theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne. A small exhibition of our images will be on display for the Heritage Open days in September and remain with the theatre therafter. The theatre has some of the best acoustics in Europe, acclaimed by Placido Domingo as just as good as La Scala. Currently about to undergo some redevelopment it is a gem of Victorian design, with its wooden stage machinery some original and some restored after a fire. You can see the winches and manual contraptions eg the "demon" trap which lifts the actors up through the stage floor. The auditorium is adorned with the most wonderful Venetian plasterwork, light sconces and gilded figures. Its stage in the late 1890's was graced by the "Divine" Sarah Bernhardt, the subject and patron of Mucha's famous artwork.
It was a privilege to have been allowed to roam the theatre, a new treasure at every turn and just as much so to engage with the people who keep it alive for us. Here are just a few glimpses....
